Leaving the Motorway Safely
Unless signs indicate that a lane leads directly off the motorway, you will normally leave the motorway by a slip road on your left. You should

You normally leave a motorway using a slip road on the left, unless signs clearly show that a lane goes directly off the motorway. Always look for and follow the signs so you are in the correct lane in good time. For example, when approaching your junction on the M1, you move into the left-hand lane early and follow the overhead signs towards the slip road, rather than suddenly cutting across at the last moment.
