Motorway rules•Rule 270
Stopping on Motorways and Hard Shoulders
This rule is a legal requirement
You MUST NOT stop on the carriageway, hard shoulder, slip road, central reservation or verge except in an emergency, or when told to do so by the police, traffic officers in uniform, an emergency sign or by flashing red light signals. Do not stop on the hard shoulder to either make or receive mobile phone calls.
💡Example
You must not stop on the motorway carriageway, hard shoulder, slip road, central reservation or verge unless it is an emergency or you are directed to stop by the police, traffic officers, signs or flashing red lights. You must not pull onto the hard shoulder just to use your mobile phone. For example, if you feel tired or want to answer a call, you should wait until you can leave the motorway at the next exit, rather than stopping on the hard shoulder.
