Motorway rulesRule 266

Choosing the Correct Motorway Lane at Junctions

Approaching a junction. Look well ahead for signals or signs. Direction signs may be placed over the road. If you need to change lanes, do so in good time. At some junctions a lane may lead directly off the motorway. Only get in that lane if you wish to go in the direction indicated on the overhead signs.

💡Example

This rule says you must look ahead for signs at motorway junctions and move into the correct lane in good time, only using lanes that match the direction you want to go. For example, if the overhead signs show the left lane is for an upcoming exit you don’t want, stay in your current lane and only move into an exit lane if you actually intend to leave the motorway there.
