Motorway rulesRule 268

Overtaking and Lane Discipline on Motorways

Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake.

💡Example

You must not use the lane on your left to overtake or weave between lanes to get past other vehicles. You can only pass traffic on your right if your lane is naturally moving faster in slow or congested conditions. For example, in a traffic jam on the motorway, if you are in the middle lane and it starts moving quicker than the right-hand lane, you may continue at the same speed and pass the slower traffic on your right, but you must not change lanes just to get ahead.
