The Highway Code Rule 175 says you MUST stop behind the white ‘Stop’ line unless the light is green. When the amber light appears, you should stop, unless you have already crossed the stop line or are so close to it that stopping might cause a collision. If you are still a fair distance away when the light turns amber, you should brake safely and stop at the line, not speed up.
