Using the road•Rule 175
Stopping at traffic light stop lines
This rule is a legal requirement
You MUST stop behind the white ‘Stop’ line across your side of the road unless the light is green. If the amber light appears you may go on only if you have already crossed the stop line or are so close to it that to stop might cause a collision.
💡Example
You must stop at the white stop line at traffic lights unless the light is green, and only continue on amber if stopping suddenly would be unsafe. This means you shouldn’t speed up to beat an amber light. For example, if you’re approaching a junction and the light changes to amber when you’re still a fair distance away, you should brake and stop at the line; but if it changes to amber when you’re almost on the line, you may continue through to avoid harsh braking and a possible rear-end collision.
