Using the roadRule 174

How to Use Box Junctions

This rule is a legal requirement
Box junctions. These have criss-cross yellow lines painted on the road (see ‘Road markings‘). You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear. However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right. At signalled roundabouts you MUST NOT enter the box unless you can cross over it completely without stopping.

💡Example

You must not enter a yellow box junction unless your exit lane is clear, except when turning right and only held up by oncoming traffic or other right-turning vehicles. At signal-controlled roundabouts, you must only enter if you can cross the box completely without stopping. For example, if traffic ahead is queuing past the box, you must wait behind it, even if the light is green, until there’s space for your whole car beyond the box. If you are turning right and only waiting for a gap in oncoming traffic, you may wait inside the box until you can complete the turn.
