Using the road•Rule 176
Traffic Lights and Junction Safety
This rule is a legal requirement
You MUST NOT move forward over the white line when the red light is showing. Only go forward when the traffic lights are green if there is room for you to clear the junction safely or you are taking up a position to turn right. If the traffic lights are not working, treat the situation as you would an unmarked junction and proceed with great care.
💡Example
You must stop at the white line when the light is red and only move on green if you can fully clear the junction or position safely to turn right. If the lights are not working, treat the junction like an unmarked crossroads and proceed very carefully. For example, at a busy crossroads you wait behind the white line on red, then only drive forward on green if there’s space beyond the junction, or if you’re moving into the centre to turn right when it’s safe. If you arrive and the signals are off, you slow right down, look in all directions, and only cross when you’re sure other drivers have seen you and are giving way where appropriate.
