Breakdowns and incidents•Rule 277
If You Can’t Reach Hard Shoulder
If you cannot get your vehicle onto the hard shoulder
💡Example
This rule explains what to do if your vehicle breaks down in a live motorway lane and you cannot reach the hard shoulder. For example, if your car suddenly loses power in the middle lane of a smart motorway and there’s no hard shoulder, you should switch on your hazard warning lights, stay in the vehicle with seat belts on if it’s safer, and call for help using your mobile or the nearest emergency telephone.
