When Your Vehicle Has a Problem
If your vehicle develops a problem, leave the motorway at the next exit or pull into a service area. If you cannot do so, you should:

If your vehicle starts to develop a fault on the motorway, you should leave at the next exit or pull into a service area as soon as it is safe. If you can’t reach an exit or services, you must follow the specific breakdown guidance for stopping on the hard shoulder or in an emergency area. For example, if your car begins to lose power, you should signal, move to the left, and safely leave at the next junction or services rather than continuing your journey and risking a breakdown in a live lane.
