Breakdowns and incidents•Rule 276
Rejoining Motorway After Breakdown
Before you rejoin the carriageway after a breakdown, build up speed on the hard shoulder and watch for a safe gap in the traffic. Be aware that other vehicles may be stationary on the hard shoulder.
💡Example
When your vehicle is fixed on the hard shoulder, you should speed up along the hard shoulder and only move back into the carriageway when there is a clear, safe gap in the traffic. You must also look out for any other vehicles that might be stopped on the hard shoulder. For example, after changing a tyre on the motorway, you drive along the hard shoulder to match the speed of passing traffic, check your mirrors and blind spot, ensure no other vehicles are stopped ahead, then safely indicate and merge into a suitable gap.
