Breakdowns and incidents•Rule 279
Safely Retrieving Items from the Road
If anything falls from your vehicle (or any other vehicle) on to the road, stop and retrieve it only if it is safe to do so.
💡Example
If something falls off your vehicle onto the road, you should only try to pick it up if it is completely safe to do so. For example, if a light bag falls off your roof on a quiet side street, you may be able to stop, check for traffic, and quickly retrieve it. But if a ladder falls off on a busy dual carriageway, you should not walk into the road and instead call the emergency services or highways authority for help.
