Motorway rulesRule 258

Red X Lane Closures on Motorways

This rule is a legal requirement
Red flashing lights. If red lights flash on a signal and a red “X” is showing, you MUST NOT drive in the lane shown as closed beyond the signal. This applies until you pass another signal indicating that the lane is no longer closed, by displaying the word “End” or a speed limit sign and you are sure that it is safe to proceed.

💡Example

If you see red flashing lights and a red X over a motorway lane, you must not use that lane past the signal until signs show it has reopened. Only move back into the lane when you see an 'End' sign or a new speed limit and you are sure it is safe. For example, if the overhead gantry shows a red X above lane three, you should move safely into another lane before the sign and stay out of lane three until a later sign shows it is open again.
