Motorway rulesRule 256

Motorway lane and overhead signals

Signals situated on the central reservation apply to all lanes. On very busy stretches, signals may be overhead with a separate signal for each lane.

💡Example

Signals on the central reservation apply to every lane on the motorway, not just the ones nearest to them. On very busy roads, you may also see overhead signals above each lane, and you must follow the one above your lane. For example, if the central reservation shows a 50 mph limit, all lanes must slow to 50, and if your individual lane’s overhead sign shows a red X, you must not use that lane even if others beside it are still open.
