Motorway rules•Rule 253
Vehicles and Users Banned from Motorways
This rule is a legal requirement
Prohibited vehicles. Motorways MUST NOT be used by pedestrians, holders of provisional motorcycle or car licences, riders of motorcycles under 50 cc, cyclists, horse riders, certain slow-moving vehicles and those carrying oversized loads (except by special permission), agricultural vehicles, and powered wheelchairs/powered mobility scooters (see Rules 36 to 46 inclusive)
💡Example
This rule says that some people and vehicles are not allowed on motorways, such as learners, cyclists, horse riders, very slow or oversized vehicles (without special permission), and mobility scooters. For example, a learner driver with only a provisional car licence must not drive on the motorway, and a farmer on a tractor must use other roads instead of joining the motorway.
