General rules, techniques and advice for all drivers and ridersRule 139

Proper Use of Climbing Lanes

Climbing and crawler lanes. These are provided on some hills. Use this lane if you are driving a slow-moving vehicle or if there are vehicles behind you wishing to overtake. Be aware of the signs and road markings which indicate the lane is about to end.

💡Example

Use climbing lanes when driving slowly or allowing others to overtake safely. For example, if you're in a heavy goods vehicle struggling uphill, move into the climbing lane to let faster cars pass you smoothly and safely.
