Motorway DrivingDifficulty: 2/5

You need to stop on a motorway because you feel unwell. Where is the safest and most appropriate place to stop?

Explanation

Rule 242 of the Highway Code says you MUST NOT leave your vehicle where it is in a dangerous position or causes unnecessary obstruction. On a motorway, you should never stop in a running lane or partly in a lane, as this is extremely dangerous and blocks traffic. If you must stop, use the hard shoulder (or an emergency refuge area where provided), pull up as far to the left as possible, and switch on your hazard warning lights so you are not an unnecessary danger or obstruction to other road users.
