Motorway RulesDifficulty: 3/5

You are joining a motorway from a slip road. At the end of the slip road there are broken white ‘Give Way’ lines across your lane, and traffic on the motorway is moving quickly in both lanes. What should you do?

Explanation

The Highway Code Rule 172 states that where there is a ‘Give Way’ sign, triangle road marking or broken white lines across the road, you MUST give way to traffic on the main road. When joining a motorway, the motorway itself is the main road. You must adjust your speed on the slip road and only merge into the left-hand lane when there is a safe gap, giving priority to traffic already on the motorway. You must not force other drivers to move over or slow down suddenly, and you must not use the hard shoulder to travel alongside traffic.
