Driving Safely Near Schools

Near schools. Drive slowly and be particularly aware of young cyclists and pedestrians. In some places, there may be a flashing amber signal below the ‘School’ warning sign which tells you that there may be children crossing the road ahead. Drive very slowly until you are clear of the area.

💡Example

When you are near a school, you must slow right down and watch carefully for children walking or cycling, especially if you see a flashing amber light under a school warning sign. Keep your speed very low and stay alert until you are well past the school area. For example, if you approach a school at home time and see the amber lights flashing, you should reduce your speed, watch for children crossing between parked cars, and only speed up again once you are clear of the school zone.
