How to cancel a theory test app subscription or free trial (and get a refund)
Updated •6 min read
To cancel a theory test app bought through an iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions; on Android, open your subscriptions in Google Play. Deleting the app does not cancel it: Google says that when you uninstall an app, your subscription won't cancel.
This page covers subscriptions bought through the Apple App Store and Google Play, subscriptions paid on a website, how to ask for a refund, and what to check before you start a free trial. We checked each Apple and Google help page on 25 October 2026. If you want to cancel your theory test booking rather than an app, that is a different process on gov.uk: cancel your theory test.
Cancel on iPhone or iPad
Apple's help page, cancel a subscription from Apple, gives these steps:
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Tap the theory test app's subscription.
- Tap Cancel subscription.
If there is no cancel button, or you see an expiry message in red text, Apple says the subscription is already cancelled. For a free trial, Apple says to cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends.
Cancel on Android
Google's help page, cancel, pause or change a subscription on Google Play, gives these steps:
- Open your subscriptions on Google Play.
- Select the subscription you want to cancel.
- Tap Cancel subscription.
- Follow the instructions.
Google says subscriptions are for an indefinite term and you are charged at the start of each billing cycle until you cancel. Uninstalling the app does not stop that.
Cancel a subscription you paid for on a website
If you paid on the company's own website rather than through an app store, Apple and Google cannot see the subscription, so it will not appear in either list above. Sign in on that website and look in the account or billing settings, or contact the company's support. Keep a copy of any cancellation email or screenshot.
Not sure where you subscribed?
Check both app store lists first. If the subscription is in neither, look for the receipt email: it names who took the payment. An Apple receipt means App Store, a Google Play receipt means Google Play, and a receipt from the app's own company means you paid on its website. If you changed phone and the app is asking you to pay again, see how to get a theory test app purchase back on a new phone before you buy anything.
How to ask for a refund
Cancelling stops future charges. It does not refund what you have already paid, so ask for that separately.
- Apple: Apple's page request a refund for apps or content you've bought from Apple says to sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com, choose "I'd like to", then "Request a refund", pick a reason, select the subscription and submit. Apple says to wait 24 to 48 hours for an update.
- Google Play: Google's refund policy for apps and in-app purchases, including subscriptions says you may be able to get a refund within 48 hours of buying, depending on the purchase. After 48 hours, Google says to contact the app's developer.
- A website subscription: ask the company directly, and check its refund policy page.
If an app keeps charging you after you cancelled, the dates on your cancellation screenshot and receipts are your evidence. Include them in the refund request.
What to check before you start a free trial
A trial that renews into a paid plan is easy to forget. A few checks before you tap "Start trial" avoid that:
- Read the in-app purchases list on the App Store or Google Play listing. It shows every price the app can charge, including weekly plans.
- Find out what happens when the trial ends. If the listing says the subscription renews automatically, you will be charged unless you cancel in time.
- Put the end date in your calendar now, a day early. Apple says to cancel a trial at least 24 hours before it ends.
- Check the billing period. A weekly price can look small next to a monthly one, so work out the cost up to your test date.
- Check which account you are using. A subscription belongs to the Apple or Google account that started it, so cancel from that same account.

How theorytest.ai charges
theorytest.ai is a web-based UK car theory test practice site, independent and not affiliated with the DVSA. It is not sold through the App Store or Google Play, so it will not appear in either subscriptions list. Our plans are:
| Plan | Price | Terms |
|---|---|---|
| Free | £0 | No payment |
| Monthly Premium | £6.99 a month | Cancel anytime |
| Lifetime Access | £12.99 | Pay once. No monthly charge. |
The full details of cancelling and refunds are in our terms and refund policy. If you only need practice until your test date, compare the cost of a monthly plan over that time with a one-off payment before you choose.
