Theory test pass expired after 2 years? Resitting, and whether your app makes you pay again

Updated •6 min read

Your theory test pass certificate number lasts for 2 years, and if you have not passed your practical driving test by then, you have to take the theory test again (gov.uk: pass mark and result). gov.uk gives no way to pause or extend it: only passing the driving test within the 2 years stops the clock mattering.

That second theory test is where many learners find a new problem. The app they paid for once has moved to a subscription, or wants paying again. This page sets out the rule, what a resit involves, and what to check before you pay for practice a second time.

The 2-year rule, as gov.uk states it

  • Your pass certificate number lasts for 2 years.
  • You must pass your driving test in that time, otherwise you have to pass the theory test again.
  • The theory test costs £23 to book (gov.uk: book your theory test).

The clock starts on the day you pass the theory test. Because gov.uk gives no way to extend it, failing a practical test, cancelling one, or moving your practical test date does not reset or extend it. If your practical test is booked for a date after your theory pass runs out, you need a new theory pass first.

What happens when it runs out

You take the full theory test again, both parts: 50 multiple-choice questions and 14 hazard perception clips, with the same pass marks of 43 out of 50 and 44 out of 75 (gov.uk: pass mark and result). You book it the same way as the first time, through the official service.

There is no shortened resit and no credit for your old pass. If you are close to the 2-year mark, check the date on your pass now. Our guide to a lost theory test certificate explains how to find your pass date if you no longer have the letter, and our post on the theory test certificate's two-year expiry covers the rule in more detail.

Why a resit often costs more than £23

The test fee is fixed. The hidden cost is revision. Two years is long enough for an app to change how it charges, and for a learner to forget most of what they learnt. Reviews of the big theory test apps repeat the same story: someone paid once, came back to resit, and found the app now wanted a subscription or a fresh payment.

Before you pay for practice again, check three things:

  1. Does your old purchase still work? Sign in with the same Apple ID, Google account or app account you used before. Our guide to lost app progress on a new phone shows how to restore a purchase.
  2. Is it a subscription now? A monthly price that renews until you cancel can cost more than a one-off payment if your resit and practical take a few months. Our guide on cancelling a theory test app subscription covers how to stop one.
  3. What does "lifetime" mean in that app? Some apps sell a one-off purchase for a single version or a set period. Read the store listing for an end date before you pay.

How to revise for a resit

You passed once, so you do not need to start from scratch. You need to find what has slipped.

  • Start with a diagnostic. A short mixed test shows which topics you have forgotten, so you do not spend days on the ones you still know.
  • Re-read the Highway Code rules behind your wrong answers. The official Highway Code is free and is updated from time to time, so a rule may have changed since your first test.
  • Practise hazard perception again. gov.uk offers free practice clips through its practice theory test. Our hazard perception guide explains the scoring.
  • Book the practical test early. Once you pass the resit, you have a fresh 2 years, but practical test waiting times can be long, so plan the two together. Our guide to the theory test vs the practical test sets out the order.

Your account is web-based, so your progress follows you to any device you sign in on. theorytest.ai does not offer hazard perception clips at the moment, so use the free gov.uk clips and the official DVSA hazard perception material for that part.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a theory test pass last?

2 years. gov.uk says your pass certificate number lasts for 2 years and you must pass your driving test in that time.

What happens if my theory test pass expires?

You have to pass the theory test again before you can take your driving test. You take the full test, both parts, and pay the £23 fee again.

Does failing or rebooking a driving test reset the 2 years?

No. The 2 years run from the day you passed the theory test. Only passing the practical test within that time keeps your theory pass from mattering again.

Can I get the 2 years extended?

gov.uk does not describe any way to extend it. If it runs out, you take the theory test again.

Will I have to pay for my theory test app again?

It depends on the app. Check whether your old purchase restores, whether the app has moved to a subscription, and what its "lifetime" purchase covers. theorytest.ai's Lifetime Access is one £12.99 payment with no renewal, so it covers a resit.
