Can I book my driving test without my pass certificate number?
gov.uk says you usually do not need your theory test pass certificate number to book your driving test (gov.uk: find your lost pass number). To book, you still need to have passed the theory test (gov.uk: book a driving test).
If DVSA does ask you for the number, you can request it online.

You can request your pass number on gov.uk using your UK driving licence and the booking reference number from when you booked your theory test. The booking reference is in your booking confirmation email.
- Use the official service: find your lost theory test pass certificate number.
- Have your driving licence and your theory test booking reference to hand.
- Check the email address you used when you booked, as that is where the confirmation was sent.
Do I need a replacement certificate for my car driving test?
For a car test, no. gov.uk says you do not need to get a replacement theory test certificate to take to your car driving test. Your examiner checks that you have passed before the test starts.
For other types of test, gov.uk says to contact DVSA, who will send a letter you can take instead of your pass certificate.
Who do I contact if I cannot find my number?
gov.uk gives the DVSA theory test enquiries contact details: email theorycustomerservices@dvsa.gov.uk or phone 0300 200 1122 (press 01), Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm.
How long does the pass certificate number last?
Your pass certificate number lasts for 2 years. You must pass your driving test in that time, otherwise you have to pass the theory test again (gov.uk: pass mark and result).
If you cannot remember when you passed, check the date before you book, because a lapsed pass means taking the theory test again. Our post on the theory test certificate's two-year expiry explains how that works, and our guide to the theory test vs the practical test covers the order of the two tests.
If your pass has lapsed
If your 2 years have run out, you need to retake the theory test before you can take your driving test. You can find test centres near you and use our free practice questions to refresh your knowledge, or take the free diagnostic to see which topics have slipped.
theorytest.ai is independent and is not affiliated with the DVSA. The figures above come from gov.uk, so check there before you book in case they change.
