Which theory test apps are actually free? What you get before the paywall
Updated •6 min read
The only fully free official practice is on gov.uk: free car mock tests and 3 free hazard perception clips. Most theory test apps are free to download but sell the full question bank, hazard clips or both, and most App Store listings do not say how much you get free.
We checked each app's own UK App Store listing on 25 October 2026, and quote only what the listing says. Prices and free limits change, so check the listing again before you download.
The free official option
gov.uk's practice theory test lets you take free mock tests for cars and practise with 3 hazard perception clips for free. Its questions and clips are not used in the real test, but are based on the same topics and show how the test works.
The Highway Code is free to read on gov.uk. The multiple-choice questions are based on it, Know your traffic signs, and Driving - the essential skills (gov.uk: revision and practice).
What each app's listing says (checked 25 October 2026)

Where a listing shows several prices for the same plan, we give the first one shown or the range. The App Store does not say which period each price covers, so open the purchase screen before you pay.
What the table tells you
- Three apps cost money upfront. Both official DVSA apps and the 4 in 1 Kit from Driving Test Success have a download price. You know the cost before you start.
- Six are free to download and sell the rest inside the app. Only one of those listings, RAC, describes what is free, and it says "a sample" rather than a number.
- Subscriptions renew. Several listings say the subscription renews automatically unless you turn it off at least 24 hours before the period ends. You manage this in your App Store account settings.
How to check before you pay
- Open the in-app purchases list on the store page. It shows every price the app can charge.
- Look for "renews" or "subscription". If it renews, put the end date in your calendar.
- Count what you can do free on day one. Answer ten questions and see whether a paywall appears.
- Check hazard perception separately. You must pass both parts (gov.uk: theory test), and some apps sell clips separately.

What is free on theorytest.ai
theorytest.ai is a web-based UK car theory test practice site, independent and not affiliated with the DVSA. These are our own limits, in full:
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | £0 | A 10-question diagnostic with no account needed (one a day once you sign in). With a free account, a daily review session and a preview of the Highway Code rule pages. |
| Monthly Premium | £6.99 a month, cancel any time | Unlimited diagnostic and practice tests, full mock tests, short topic sessions, wrong answers repeated, a study plan, progress charts and full Highway Code access. |
| Lifetime Access | £12.99, paid once | The same as Monthly Premium, with no monthly charge. |
Full 50-question practice tests are part of Premium, not the free plan. theorytest.ai does not offer hazard perception clips at the moment, so use the gov.uk free clips or an app that has them for that part. Our hazard perception scoring guide explains how clicks are scored.
