Theory test app for motorbike, HGV or ADI: which practice covers which test

Updated •5 min read

Each UK theory test has its own official practice material, so check the test type before you pay for an app. theorytest.ai covers the car theory test only: it has no motorcycle, lorry, bus or approved driving instructor (ADI) practice.

Learners regularly buy a theory test app and then find it only covers cars, or cars and motorbikes. The quickest check is to match your test to the official DVSA material that gov.uk lists for it, then make sure any other app names your test type on its store listing before you pay.

Which official practice covers which test

All of this is from the revision pages on gov.uk, checked on 26 October 2026.

Car and motorcycle: close, but not the same

The car and motorcycle tests share the same structure: 50 multiple-choice questions and 14 hazard perception clips, with the same pass marks. The question banks differ. The motorcycle questions include riding topics, such as your machine and protective clothing, that a car app does not ask about. Our guide to the motorcycle theory test vs the car test sets out the differences.

A car-only app is not enough revision for a motorcycle test, even though most of the Highway Code content overlaps.

Lorry and bus: a different test

The lorry and bus theory test is part 1 of the Driver CPC, with more questions, more clips and higher pass marks than the car test, and it is booked as a different test type. A car app does not prepare you for it. Our HGV and LGV theory test guide explains the format.

ADI part 1: for driving instructors

The ADI part 1 test is the first of three tests to qualify as a driving instructor. It has multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception part, and you must pass both. It costs £81 to book (gov.uk: ADI part 1 test). The reading list is aimed at teaching, not at passing a learner test, so a learner's car app is not the right tool.

How to check an app before you pay

  1. Read the store listing for the test type. Look for the exact words: car, motorcycle, LGV, PCV or ADI.
  2. Check the free part first. A free sample of questions shows whether the content matches your test. Our page on which theory test apps are actually free shows what each listing gives you before the paywall.
  3. If you paid for the wrong one, cancel any subscription straight away and ask the store for a refund. Our guide on cancelling a theory test app subscription shows how on iPhone and Android.

What theorytest.ai covers

theorytest.ai is a UK car theory test practice website, independent and not affiliated with the DVSA. It covers the car multiple-choice questions only. It does not cover the motorcycle, lorry, bus or ADI theory tests, and theorytest.ai does not offer hazard perception clips at the moment. If you are revising for any test other than the car test, use the official material for your test in the table above.

gov.uk lists the Official DVSA Theory Test kit for lorries and for buses and coaches, online for PC or Mac, plus a hazard perception guide that is also available as an app.

What should I use to revise for the ADI part 1 test?

gov.uk lists four books and recommends the DVSA theory test kit for approved driving instructors e-Learning, including for hazard perception practice.

Does theorytest.ai cover motorbike, HGV or ADI tests?

No. theorytest.ai covers the car theory test only.
