Road works, level crossings and tramwaysRule 298

Using Ungated Open Level Crossings

Open crossings. These have no gates, barriers, attendant or traffic lights but will have a ‘Give Way’ sign. You should look both ways, listen and make sure there is no train coming before you cross.

💡Example

At open level crossings without gates or lights, you must stop, look carefully in both directions and listen to check no train is coming before you cross. For example, when you approach a rural railway crossing with only a ‘Give Way’ sign, you slow right down, look and listen for trains in both directions, and only drive over the tracks when you are sure it is completely clear.
