Road works, level crossings and tramwaysRule 297

Using unlit railway crossings safely

If there are no lights, follow the procedure in Rule 296. Stop, look both ways and listen before you cross. If there is a railway telephone, always use it to contact the signal operator to make sure it is safe to cross. Inform the signal operator again when you are clear of the crossing.

💡Example

At a railway crossing with no lights, you must stop, look carefully in both directions, listen for trains, and only cross when you are sure it is safe. If there is a railway telephone, you must call the signal operator before crossing to check it is safe, and then call again once you are completely clear of the tracks. For example, if you are driving on a country lane and reach a quiet level crossing with no working lights, you stop, use the trackside phone to confirm no trains are coming, cross when told it is safe, and then ring again to say you have finished crossing.
