Overhead electric cable warning sign: a red-bordered triangle with a lightning symbol, above a safe height plate

Overhead electric cable

The overhead electric cable sign warns of power cables crossing above the road ahead. The plate below gives the maximum height of vehicle that can pass safely. If your vehicle or anything it carries is taller than that, do not go under the cables: stop and find another route.

Official Highway Code caption: “Overhead electric cable; plate indicates maximum height of vehicles which can pass safely.”

Listed under “Mostly triangular” in The Highway Code: traffic signs (GOV.UK). For every sign in more detail, see the Department for Transport’s Know your traffic signs.
