Road works, level crossings and tramwaysRule 291

Safe Driving at Level Crossings

A level crossing is where a road crosses a railway or tramway line. Approach and cross it with care. Never drive onto a crossing until the road is clear on the other side and do not get too close to the car in front. Never stop or park on, or near, a crossing.

💡Example

This rule says you must only drive onto a level crossing when you can fully clear it, and you must never stop, queue, or park on or close to the tracks. Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front so you’re not forced to stop on the crossing. For example, if traffic is backing up ahead, you should wait before the crossing until there’s enough space to drive right across and off it, instead of following the car in front onto the tracks and getting stuck there.
