Rules for users of powered wheelchairs and mobility scootersRule 42

Direction for Mobility Scooters on Road

This rule is a legal requirement
When on the road, Class 3 vehicles should travel in the direction of the traffic. Class 2 users should always use the pavement when it is available. When there is no pavement, you should use caution when on the road. Class 2 users should, where possible, travel in the direction of the traffic. If you are travelling at night when lights MUST be used, you should travel in the direction of the traffic to avoid confusing other road users.

💡Example

Class 3 mobility scooters should travel in the direction of traffic on the road, while Class 2 users should stay on pavements or, if necessary, travel with traffic when on the road. For example, if you're using a Class 3 scooter on a busy street, ensure you're moving with the flow of vehicles, and if you're on a Class 2 scooter but there’s no pavement, proceed along the road in the same direction as the cars, especially at night when lights are required.
