Road works, level crossings and tramways•Rule 303
Safe Driving at Tram Stops
This rule is a legal requirement
Tram stops. Where the tram stops at a platform, either in the middle or at the side of the road, you MUST follow the route shown by the road signs and markings. At stops without platforms you MUST NOT drive between a tram and the left-hand kerb when a tram has stopped to pick up passengers. If there is no alternative route signed, do not overtake the tram – wait until it moves off.
💡Example
You must follow any signed route around tram stop platforms, and you must never drive between a stopped tram and the left-hand kerb when it is picking up passengers. If there is no signed way to pass, you must wait behind the tram until it moves off. For example, if a tram stops in the road with people getting on and off and there’s no marked lane to go around it, you stay behind the tram instead of squeezing down the left side past the passengers.
