Driving in adverse weather conditionsRule 226

Headlights and Fog Lights in Poor Visibility

This rule is a legal requirement
You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (see Rule 236).

💡Example

When you can’t see more than about 100 metres ahead, you must turn on your headlights, and you can also use your fog lights. For example, if you’re driving on a dual carriageway in thick fog and can barely see the car in front, you should switch on your dipped headlights and fog lights, then turn the fog lights off again once the fog clears and visibility improves.
