Driving in adverse weather conditions•Rule 227
Stopping Distances in Wet Weather
Wet weather. In wet weather, stopping distances will be at least double those required for stopping on dry roads (see ‘Typical stopping distances’). This is because your tyres have less grip on the road. In wet weather
💡Example
In wet weather, your car needs at least twice the normal distance to stop because the tyres have less grip on the road. You should leave a much bigger gap to the vehicle in front. For example, if you normally leave a two-second gap in dry conditions on a dual carriageway, increase it to at least four seconds when it’s raining heavily so you have enough space to brake safely.
