Before overtaking you must carefully check that it is safe, legal and necessary, and that you have enough time and space to pass without risk. For example, before overtaking a slow-moving tractor on a country road, you check your mirrors, look over your right shoulder, ensure there are no oncoming vehicles or junctions ahead, and only move out when you are sure you can pass and return safely.
