Theory test video clip questions: how many there are and how they work

Updated •4 min read

Three of the 50 multiple-choice questions in the UK car theory test are about a short video of a driving situation. They are part of the multiple-choice section, not the separate hazard perception test.

How many video clip questions are in the theory test?

gov.uk says three of the questions are about a short video (gov.uk: multiple-choice questions). They sit inside the 50, not on top of it.

  • The car theory test has 50 multiple-choice questions, and you have 57 minutes to answer them.
  • Three of those 50 questions are about a short video.
  • The pass mark for the multiple-choice part is 43 out of 50 (gov.uk: pass mark and result).

The video questions count towards your 50 like any other question. There is no separate pass mark for them.

What is the video in the theory test?

The video shows a normal driving situation, such as driving through a town centre or on a country road. gov.uk says the video is silent and you can watch it as many times as you like during the test.

You do not need to listen for anything, and you do not need to rush the first viewing. You can replay it when you reach each of the three questions.

How do you answer the video questions?

A question and several possible answers appear on screen, and you select the right answer. This is the same as every other multiple-choice question.

  • Read the question before you replay the video, so you know what to look for.
  • Watch again for each question rather than answering from memory.
  • You can flag a question to come back to later, and you can go back and change any answer.

Is this the same as the hazard perception test?

No. After the multiple-choice part, the hazard perception part has 14 clips where you click as a hazard develops, and it has its own pass mark of 44 out of 75. Our hazard perception test guide covers it in full. The video questions in the multiple-choice part are different: you answer ordinary questions about what you saw.

How to practise video clip questions

Test yourself on the same topics the questions draw on, such as road positioning, junctions and vulnerable road users. Our free practice questions let you work through topics at your own pace, and the free diagnostic shows which topics need work. For the wider picture of the test, see how many questions are in the car theory test.
