Ring road sign: what the green R sign means
Updated •5 min read
The ring road sign, a white capital R on a green background with a yellow border, tells you that the primary route you are on forms part of a ring road. It is a direction sign, not an order: follow it if you want to go round the town rather than through the centre.
The Highway Code shows two signs with the caption "Primary route forming part of a ring road" (gov.uk: traffic signs). One is the small R sign. The other is a green junction sign with white "Ring road" panels pointing left and right.
What the ring road signs look like
| Sign | What it looks like | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Ring road route sign | A white R on a green rectangle with rounded corners and a yellow border | The primary route is part of a ring road |
| Ring road at a junction | A green direction sign with white panels reading "Ring road" on the turnings | Which turnings lead onto the ring road |
Both signs sit in the Highway Code's "Signs on primary routes - green backgrounds" group. Know your traffic signs shows a similar junction sign and says that, in that example, "the sign indicates that the primary route is a ring road" (gov.uk: Know your traffic signs, direction signs).
Our sign list has both: ring road primary route and ring road primary route at crossroads.
Why the sign is green: direction sign colours
Direction signs are mostly rectangular, and the background colour tells you what kind of road the sign is on. The Highway Code's traffic signs page sets the colours out:
| Colour | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Blue background | Signs on motorways |
| Green background | Signs on primary routes |
| White background with a black border | Signs on non-primary and local routes |
| Brown panel | The route to a tourist attraction |
| Blue panel on a green sign | The motorway starts at the junction ahead |
| White panel on a green sign | A local or non-primary route leading from the junction ahead |
So a green R sign tells you two things at once: you are on a primary route, and that route is part of a ring road. On local route signs, the Highway Code says route numbers on a green background show the direction to a primary route, and route numbers on a blue background show the direction to a motorway.
What you should do
A ring road sign is information, so there is nothing you must do. It helps you plan:
- Decide early. If the signs for your destination point along the ring road, get into the right lane in good time, as the lane signs show.
- Follow the confirmatory signs. After a junction, route confirmatory signs on primary routes show you are on the road you meant to take.
- Watch for other panels on the sign. Know your traffic signs says direction signs at a junction may include warning triangles or prohibitory roundels, for example for an opening bridge on the road to one side.
How the theory test asks about it
Road signs are one of the subject areas the car theory test must cover, and Know your traffic signs is one of the three books gov.uk says the questions are based on (gov.uk: revision and practice). Gov.uk does not publish the questions, so we cannot say whether this sign will come up.
Direction sign questions usually test the colour system or what to do with the lane arrows. Try our practice question on overhead direction signs showing the left lane becomes an exit, which tests reading a direction sign and staying in the right lane.
Our road signs guide explains how to learn signs by shape and colour, and the brown tourist signs guide covers the other common direction-sign colour.
