Lost your theory test booking confirmation? How to check your appointment details

Updated •4 min read

If you have lost or deleted your theory test confirmation email, you can check your date, time and test centre on gov.uk with your UK driving licence number. You do not need to take the confirmation to the test.

Check your appointment online

gov.uk has a free service for this (gov.uk: check your theory test appointment details). It is for people who have lost or deleted their email confirmation, and it shows:

  • the date and time of your theory test;
  • the address of the theory test centre.

You need your UK driving licence number to use it. gov.uk also says you do not need to take your booking confirmation to your theory test. Take your photo ID instead, as described in our guide to what to take on the day.

If you are in Northern Ireland, note that gov.uk says there is a different service to check your theory test there.

If you cannot use the online service

Contact the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) (gov.uk: check your appointment details):

Email theorycustomerservices@dvsa.gov.uk
Telephone 0300 200 1122
Hours Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm

Calls are charged. gov.uk links to a page on call charges.

What to have ready to change or cancel by phone or email

You can change a test online with your driving licence number. To change or cancel by phone or email, gov.uk says you will need to give (gov.uk: change your theory test appointment):

  • your full name, as it appears on your driving licence;
  • your date of birth;
  • your address, including your postcode;
  • your driving licence number;
  • your booking reference number.

If you have lost your confirmation, start with the online check above to recover your appointment details, then contact DVSA for anything else.

Do not miss the notice period

If you find out your appointment is no longer convenient, check the deadline first. gov.uk says you must give at least 3 full working days' notice to change your test or you will have to pay again. Monday to Saturday count as working days, but Sundays and public holidays do not (gov.uk: change your theory test appointment). The same service lets you:

  • find an earlier test;
  • move your test to a later date;
  • change which test centre you use.

Check you are on the official service

gov.uk sets the car theory test fee at £23 and links to its own booking service. Our guide to theory test cost and booking explains how to avoid paying more through unofficial sites. The fee comes from gov.uk: book your theory test.

What you need for any of this

Every route above asks for your UK driving licence number, and phone or email changes also ask for your booking reference. Keep both somewhere safe once you book, so you never need to look them up on the day.

Check your readiness while you wait

Once you know your date, a quick check of where you stand helps. Try the free theorytest.ai diagnostic. theorytest.ai is independent and is not affiliated with the DVSA.
