Stopping Distances: How to Remember Them Without Rote
Stopping distances are the topic learners hate most, usually because they try to memorise a grid of numbers cold and it slides straight back out. You don't have to. The figures follow a pattern, and once you can see it you can rebuild the entire table from two simple rules.
Here's the shortcut. Your thinking distance in feet is roughly the same as your speed in miles per hour. Your braking distance grows much faster than your speed, so doubling your speed more than doubles the distance you need to stop. And to actually use any of this behind the wheel, you swap the feet for the two-second rule.

- Stopping distance = thinking distance + braking distance. They are two different things and the test treats them separately.

Two distances, not one
The single biggest reason this topic feels impossible is that people treat the stopping distance as one lump. It's two.
Thinking distance is how far the car travels while you notice the hazard and move your foot to the brake. Your reactions don't get quicker as you speed up, so this part rises in a straight line with speed.
Braking distance is how far the car travels once the brakes are actually working. This part depends on speed squared in the physics, which is why it rises so much faster. Add the two together and you get the overall stopping distance the test asks about. When you want to drill it, work through the questions by category rather than staring at the grid.
Scaffold rule one: thinking distance in feet
Line the speeds up in tens and the thinking distance is almost the same number in feet: 20 mph gives about 20 feet, 30 gives about 30, and so on up to 70 giving about 70. That is not a coincidence you need to memorise, it is just the reaction time working out that way. One rule, and a whole column of the table is done.
Scaffold rule two: braking grows much faster
The braking column is where people give up, so here is the trick that rebuilds it. Take the overall stopping distance in feet and you get it by multiplying the speed by a factor that starts at 2 and goes up by half a step each time:
- 20 mph, times 2, gives 40 feet.
- 30 mph, times 2.5, gives 75 feet.
- 40 mph, times 3, gives 120 feet.
- 50 mph, times 3.5, gives 175 feet.
- 60 mph, times 4, gives 240 feet.
- 70 mph, times 4.5, gives 315 feet.
That single climbing multiplier gives you every overall figure. Subtract the thinking distance and the braking distance falls out. You have reconstructed the whole grid from two rules instead of memorising twelve numbers.

The test may ask you for a specific figure, so it is worth being able to produce them. But produce them from the pattern, not from raw memory. Wet and icy: the multipliers
The dry table is only the start. Grip changes everything, and the Highway Code gives you round multipliers to apply.
- Wet roads: stopping distances can be at least doubled, because your tyres have less grip.
- Ice and snow: stopping distances can be up to ten times longer than on a dry road.
You will not be asked to calculate a precise wet figure to the metre. You will be asked to know that rain roughly doubles it and ice can multiply it enormously. That is the level the questions test, and it is the level that keeps you alive.
The two-second rule: the version you'll actually use
Here is the counterintuitive bit. Once you pass, you will never measure a gap in feet or metres. You use time instead, and it does the maths for you at any speed.
Pick a fixed point ahead, a sign or a bridge. When the car in front passes it, start counting: "only a fool breaks the two-second rule". If you reach the point before you finish saying it, you are too close. Two seconds on a dry road, and you double it to at least four seconds in the wet. On ice you leave far more again.
