Rules about animals•Rule 54
Horse Riding on Roads and Paths
This rule is a legal requirement
You MUST NOT take a horse onto a footpath or pavement, and you should not take a horse onto a cycle track. Use a bridleway where possible. Equestrian crossings may be provided for horse riders to cross the road and you should use these where available (see Rule 27). You should dismount at level crossings where a ‘horse rider dismount’ sign is displayed.
💡Example
You must not ride a horse on pavements or footpaths, and should avoid cycle tracks. Use bridleways and equestrian crossings when available. For example, if you are riding your horse through a village, stick to designated bridleways and equestrian crossings, and dismount at a level crossing if there is a sign instructing you to do so.
