Crossing Tram and Rail Tracks Safely

All road users, but particularly cyclists and motorcyclists, should take extra care when driving or riding close to or crossing the tracks, especially if the rails are wet. You should take particular care when crossing the rails at shallow angles, on bends and at junctions. It is safest to cross the tracks directly at right angles. Other road users should be aware that cyclists and motorcyclists may need more space to cross the tracks safely.

💡Example

When you ride or drive over tram or rail tracks, especially in the wet, you should cross them as close to a right angle as possible so your wheels don’t slip. Cyclists and motorcyclists may need to move out or change position to do this safely. For example, a cyclist approaching tram tracks on a bend may briefly move towards the centre of the lane to cross the rails at a right angle, while drivers behind slow down and give them extra space.
