Road works, level crossings and tramways•Rule 294
Using Railway Telephones at Crossings
This rule is a legal requirement
Railway telephones. If you are driving a large or slow- moving vehicle, a long, low vehicle with a risk of grounding, or herding animals, a train could arrive before you are clear of the crossing. You MUST obey any sign instructing you to use the railway telephone to obtain permission to cross. You MUST also telephone when clear of the crossing if requested to do so.
💡Example
If you’re in a large, slow or long vehicle, or moving animals, you must use the railway telephone where instructed to get permission before crossing the tracks, as a train may arrive before you clear the crossing. You must also call again once you are safely across if the sign or operator tells you to. For example, if you’re driving a low-loader that might ground on the rails, you stop at the crossing, use the railway phone to check it’s safe, cross only when told, then phone again to confirm you are clear.
