Driving in adverse weather conditionsRule 236

Correct Use of Fog Lights

This rule is a legal requirement
You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves.

💡Example

Only use your front and rear fog lights when visibility is seriously reduced, such as in very thick fog, because they can dazzle others and hide your brake lights. For example, if you are driving on a motorway in dense fog and can barely see the vehicle ahead, you may switch on your fog lights, but once the fog clears and you can see much further, you must switch them off again.
