Driving in adverse weather conditionsRule 234

Slowing Down Before Entering Fog

Before entering fog check your mirrors then slow down. If the word ‘Fog’ is shown on a roadside signal but the road is clear, be prepared for a bank of fog or drifting patchy fog ahead. Even if it seems to be clearing, you can suddenly find yourself in thick fog.

💡Example

This rule means you should check your mirrors and reduce your speed before driving into fog, and stay ready for sudden thick patches even if the road ahead looks clear. For example, you see a motorway sign saying ‘Fog’ but the air still looks clear, so you check behind, ease off the accelerator and increase your following distance, ready in case you suddenly hit a dense bank of fog around the next bend.
