Road signs, markings, and vehicle markings•Rule 220
Powered Mobility Vehicles and Beacons
This rule is a legal requirement
Powered vehicles used by disabled people. These small vehicles travel at a maximum speed of 8 mph (12 km/h). On a dual carriageway where the speed limit exceeds 50 mph (80 km/h) they MUST have a flashing amber beacon, but on other roads you may not have that advance warning (see Rules 36 to 46 inclusive).
💡Example
Some mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs used by disabled people are slow-moving and can only travel up to 8 mph, so they can be harder to spot. On dual carriageways with speed limits over 50 mph, they must have a flashing amber beacon, but on other roads they might not have any beacon at all. For example, you might see a mobility scooter with a flashing amber light using a dual carriageway, but the same type of scooter on a 30 mph residential road may have no beacon, so you need to look carefully and be prepared to slow down.
