Using Passing Places on Single-Track Roads

Single-track roads. These are only wide enough for one vehicle. They may have special passing places. If you see a vehicle coming towards you, or the driver behind wants to overtake, pull into a passing place on your left, or wait opposite a passing place on your right. Give way to road users coming uphill whenever you can. If necessary, reverse until you reach a passing place to let the other vehicle pass. Slow down when passing pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.

💡Example

On single-track roads, only one vehicle can pass at a time, so you must use passing places and give way, especially to vehicles coming uphill. Be prepared to slow down, stop, or reverse to a passing place, and take extra care around pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders. For example, if you see a car approaching on a narrow Highland road, you pull into a passing place on your left and wait while they drive through, then move off slowly, giving plenty of room to a cyclist just ahead.
