General rules, techniques and advice for all drivers and riders•Rule 129
Double White Line Restrictions
This rule is a legal requirement
Double white lines where the line nearest you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.
💡Example
You must not cross or straddle a solid double white line nearest to you unless it is safe and necessary to enter a property or side road. For example, if you are approaching a solid double white line and there's a cyclist travelling at 8 mph, you may safely overtake them if the road ahead is clear.
