Vehicle SafetyDifficulty: 3/5

You are driving on a wet road when you brake sharply and the rear of your car begins to skid to the left. How should you respond to regain control of the vehicle?

Explanation

According to the Highway Code, Rule 119, skids are usually caused by harsh braking, acceleration or steering, or driving too fast for the road conditions. If a skid occurs, you should remove the cause by fully releasing the brake or easing off the accelerator, and steer in the direction of the skid. If the rear of the vehicle skids to the left, you steer left to help the tyres regain grip and stabilise the vehicle. Steering the opposite way, braking harder, or using the handbrake can make the skid worse.
