You are driving at about 20 mph along a narrow residential street with parked cars on both sides. A group of cyclists ahead is riding two abreast in the centre of the lane, about a door’s width from the parked vehicles, and you cannot see clearly past them. What should you do?
Explanation
The Highway Code (Rule 213) states that on narrow sections of road, on quiet roads or streets, at junctions and in slower-moving traffic, cyclists may ride in the centre of the lane and it can be safer for them to ride two abreast. You should allow them to do so for their own safety so they can see and be seen. Cyclists are also advised to keep at least a door’s width or about 1 metre from parked cars. You must not try to squeeze past within the lane or pressure them to move closer to the kerb. Instead, you should stay back at a safe distance and only overtake when you have a clear view ahead and enough space to pass them properly and safely.
