Vehicle SafetyDifficulty: 2/5
You are driving on a road with double white lines, where the line nearest to you is solid. There is a cyclist ahead travelling at about 8 mph (13 km/h). When may you legally cross the solid white line to overtake?
Explanation
Rule 129 of the Highway Code states that you must not cross or straddle double white lines where the line nearest to you is solid, except in specific circumstances. One of these is when it is necessary to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less, provided the road is clear. Therefore, you may cross the line to overtake the slow-moving cyclist if it is safe to do so.
