Emergency VehiclesDifficulty: 2/5
You are cycling on the road when you hear an emergency vehicle with flashing blue lights approaching from behind. The traffic ahead starts to slow down and some drivers pull partly onto the pavement to make space. There is a narrow pedestrian-only pavement on your left. What should you do?
Explanation
Under Rule 64 of the Highway Code, you MUST NOT cycle on a pavement that is for pedestrians only. When an emergency vehicle approaches, you should cooperate and allow it to pass, but you must do so safely and legally. This means slowing down and, if necessary, stopping in a safe position on the road rather than riding onto a pedestrian-only pavement. You must not break other rules, such as cycling on the pavement, even to make room for an emergency vehicle.
