You are driving on a narrow country road with high hedges and limited visibility. As you approach a sharp bend, you hear the siren of an emergency vehicle somewhere ahead, but you cannot yet see it. What should you do?
Explanation
On country roads, Rule 154 of the Highway Code says you must take extra care on bends and ensure you can stop within the distance you can see to be clear. When you become aware of an emergency vehicle but cannot see it, you should reduce speed, be prepared for hazards (including oncoming vehicles), and avoid stopping in unsafe or hidden positions such as on or just before a bend. The general guidance on emergency vehicles (Rules 219–221) states that you should not endanger yourself or others, or stop where you would obstruct the view or path of other road users. Option A correctly combines reduced speed, preparation for a potential hazard around a blind bend, and only stopping or pulling in where it is safe and visible.
